Can You Give CBD Oil to Pets?
Posted by Arya Saedi on
We are a nation of animal lovers, and just as more people are thinking about what they put into their own bodies, we are also considering what we give to our pets too.
Organic food, all meat diets, tailored diets, even veganism, the selection of different wellness routines for pets is wide-ranging these days - and it doesn’t end with food.
Health and wellness supplements for pets are becoming more popular, and just like with humans, this includes CBD.
Growing numbers of people are asking the question “can I give CBD Oil to my pet?”, and the answer - in general - is yes!
CBD oil is used by humans, and it is safe for animals.
We’ve talked plenty about what cbd is and how it helps humans, and very similar things apply when it comes to giving CBD to your cat or dog!
CBD is perfectly safe for the average pet to take, providing that you choose a high-quality, pure hemp option. When picking CBD oil for your pet, you should always choose a THC free option, and ensure that it doesn’t contain any sugar or artificial flavours.
It’s also important that you calculate the proper dosage for your pet based on the strength of the CBD oil for human consumption. Generally speaking, pets are smaller than us, and so will require a smaller dose. It’s always better to start with a lower concentration and then adjust accordingly. The general rule of thumb for this, is to give a dosage of 2-5mg of CBD per every 10lb of your pets body weight. We recommend starting with our 500mg CBD oil, which contains around 16mg of CBD per 1ml droplet. From here you can monitor the effectiveness of, and adjust accordingly.
Example below:
1/4 ml (a quarter of a dropper) = 4.25 of our 5-00mg CBD 30ml size bottle. For example, if your pet is 35lbs you need 6-7mg of CBD twice a day. So according to the dropper measurements, it is a 1/2ml point on a dropper twice a day.
There are some CBD oils out there which are branded as being specifically “for dogs” or “for cats”, but the truth is that these are just THC free, organic oils - exactly the same as what we sell here at Elite CBD - and the core ingredients are no different from a good quality “human” cbd.
If you stick to the above guidelines, then your pet can receive just as many benefits from the CBD oil as you can.
CBD Oil Benefits for Pets
Pets can receive many of the same benefits from CBD oil as humans can.
Some studies have shown that CBD oil can help with pain management from conditions such as arthritis, and also help provide calm for animals who suffer from high levels of anxiety.
It is important though that you use CBD oil as a supplemental product, and not a replacement for any medications which have been provided by a qualified veterinarian.
Are There Side Effects Of Giving CBD To Your Pet?
Just like with humans, high-quality CBD oil should have little to no negative side effects, so your pet should be completely fine.
Although, just as with taking anything new, it’s always best to keep a close eye on your pet for the first hour or so after their first dosage of CBD oil.
As always, if you have any concerns, or if your pet has any allergies, then we always recommend speaking to a qualified veterinarian before beginning the CBD oil treatment.
How To Give CBD Oil to a Cat or Dog
As with any supplement or medication, giving it to your pet can often depend on how co-operative they are feeling on the day!
Luckily, applying CBD oil is relatively easy to do
With a well behaved pet, it can be as simple as taking the tincture and putting a drop or two onto the animals tongue. If that’s not possible though, simply drip the CBD oil into your pets food, and they can easily ingest it that way.
Summary: You can safely give CBD oil to your pet, in most cases.
So there you have it, generally speaking CBD oil is perfectly safe to give to your pets, so long as you stick to the following:
- Choose a THC free, organic product
- Adjust dosage based on your pets size
- Use CBD as a supplement - never use instead of prescribed medication
- Monitor your pet after first dosage, and speak to a vet if you have any concerns
